Hi everyone, thanks for stopping by! This page is a simple beginner's guide for people that just started to play Valve's awesome Left 4 Dead. I made this list because most retail versions of L4D for PC don't have a manual. (wtf?) It contains a few basic gameplay rules and tips so that new players can get right into the online action without getting your ass kicked from a server for "being a n00b". Remember, most of these tips are fairly general and some of them apply to any co-op based game.

Enjoy! ~Steve76

Left 4 Dead is a CO-OP game. Don't run miles ahead to score some kills, pills or anything else, no matter how awesome you are. If you do this too often your teammates will stop liking you and maybe even vote-kick you from the game. This also goes for staying too far behind. If you want to pWn alone, go play some deathmatches somewhere else.

Check your fire. Learn to shoot around your teammates. They have a clear outline so you can see them even when you're surrounded by a mob of infected.

When your team gets attacked by a horde of zombies, and you're in the front line, CROUCH. This saves you from unintentional friendly fire and your teammates behind you can shoot over your head to deal out max damage.

Reload. Even when you've just fired 1 bullet. When you have the opportunity, always reload. That extra bullet could save you or your team's ass in the end.

Close doors behind you. Infected can't open doors, they have to destroy them. If doors are still intact, close them. It could buy you a couple of precious seconds.

Don't empty your guns all at the same time. When your teammate(s) start firing, check if it is necessary to shoot. This way you will have ammo left to provide cover when they have to reload. I know it kicks ass to have your name on top in the "Damage done" stat, but in the end, that stat doesn't mean squat when you fail to get to the safehouse.

If possible, use a mic for communication. The in-game voice commands (activated by pressing 'Z' or 'X') can get you a long way, but a mic is faster. When you play L4D in expert mode, you'll probably die without one.

NEVER go AFK (away from keyboard) in the middle of a game. If it is REALLY necessary, press Escape to go to the main menu and select "Take a break". This way, the AI will take over your character so your teammates can continue playing. AI isn't perfect, but it's always better than making three players wait and fight off hordes of infected while you are taking a shit.

If a teammember gets pounced by a Hunter or constricted by a Smoker, use a MELEE ATTACK (Right Mouse button) on that teammate to free him. Only shoot the teammate or the attacking Boss Infected when he's too far away. This saves your teammate from unintentional friendly fire.
